Since I've already done a post on Valentine's Day in Japan, I'll use this day to look at the seedier side of romance - the love hotel.
As the name suggests, love hotels are places where you can go when your feeling frisky and may not be close, or able to go, to your home. Love hotels are popular in big cities in Japan and, of course, can be rented for the night or by the hour.
The entrances to these places are often discrete and interaction with the staff is at a minimum, so much so, that some love hotels are totally electronic where you use a kiosk to look at pictures of the different rooms, rent them and pay for them, all without seeing or talking to another soul.
In America all rooms in a single hotel are designed to look the same, but that is not so in a love hotel. Most rooms have moving or rotating beds, mirrored ceilings, muted lighting and karaoke machines, but that is where all similarities end. In more expensive love hotels, each room is unique and designed to cater to different fetishes. Some rooms are adorned with anime girls, some to look like dungeons, some like hi-tech space ships and some that look like subway cars; each room is specifically made to live out what ever fantasy the occupants might have.
While this might sound like a dirty business to be in, many big companies in Japan have owned chains of love hotels, most notably Nintendo!
Yes, the company who now makes video games known and loved by children all over the world used to own several love hotels.
As Mario would say, "Mama mia, let'sa go!"
