My wife just made chicken for dinner and she usually serves it on a bed of shredded lettuce, because in Japan, presentation is everything.
Now I usually get a dirty look after I finish my meal because I am an American and we usually don't eat those little veggies that are just there for decoration, but this time I decided that I'd eat everything.
We didn't have any salad dressing and while I may be sweet, even I'm not eating lettuce dry. I reached around and found this bottle of Kewpie Mayonnaise and squirted that 'ish all over my lettuce.
Now Kewpie Mayo is waaaay different from Hellman's Mayo that most Americans are used to. Kewpie is the bomb! It is sold in plastic squeeze bottles and it isn't as thick as mayo sold in the US and man, is it tasty!
Mayonnaise made in America is made with eggs and distilled vinegar, where as Kewpie Mayo is made with just the egg yolks and rice vinegar - but the taste couldn't be more different.
In America just about the only thing I would put mayo on was a roast beef sub (mmmmmm roast beef....) but here in Japan, you can put Kewpie Mayo on just about anything and it will taste awesome.
The real secret? It's the MSG that makes the mayo taste so damn good.
